Employees at the BP petrol station and Kwikspar on the corner of African and Milner streets report two recent incidents of people stealing.

In the first unrelated incident, a woman drove into the filling station and told a petrol attendant that she was in a hurry. When her car had been filled with R200 of unleaded petrol she handed the attendant a crumpled up R20 note.

In the short time it took the attendant to realise she hadn't given him the full amount the woman had driven off. The attendant, who asked to remain anonymous, said “I chased after the woman and shouted for her to come back but she just drove off”.

He then had to pay the difference out of his earnings.

The second incident saw a drunk student try to steal goods from inside the store. Deon Strydom, assistant manager at the Kwikspar, said “One of the staff members saw him stealing stuff”. A Hi-Tec response team as well as the police were called in and the would-be thief was caught.

“We see these incidents happen, people have stolen from us before but we don’t press charges because it is not our job to do that. That is up to security and police,” Strydom said. It is still unclear whether or not charges will be pressed against the student.

Kenny Knoetze, a member of Hi-Tec's armed response unit, said similar incidents involving students are a fairly regular occurrence. “It is sad when a student is kicked out of university because he wants something small like a chocolate but doesn’t pay. They ruin their lives,” Knoetze said.
