Three men accused of gang raping of a 17-year-old girl will soon give their side of the story as the trial date is set to be decided in court on Friday 6 September.
After a four-month wait Extension 9 residents are close to finding out what happened leading up to the girl's brutal rape and attack that sent shockwaves through the community earlier this year.
People were horrified by what had happened on 22 March. The girl's mother said her daughter was found wrapped in a carpet at a house the day after she was attacked. She was only found when people living in the house heard her moaning and went to investigate.
She spent time in hospitals in Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown being treated for stab wounds. The school girl was stabbed twice in the back of the neck and was unable to use her right arm and leg after the incident, her mother said. She has only recently regained the ability to walk on her right leg and has had to relearn to write with her left hand.
In June she suffered another huge blow when her seven-month-old baby died.
Magistrate Dion Kotze transferred the case to the regional court on 9 July. The three suspects aged 27, 28 and 29 appeared briefly in the Grahamstown regional court last Friday. The case was postponed to 6 September for the three men to get legal aid representation and for the court to set a trial date.
