A panel of judges took a close look at the dancing skills of Rhodes University staff and students at the Rhodes Dance Society's annual Dancing with the Staff competition on Friday 23 August.

The panel included the likes of music lecturer Yemu Matibe, Deputy Dean of Students Roger Adams and renowned adjudicator Peter Mann.

First up was Dr. Doreen Bekker of the Economics Department, who wooed the crowd with a sensual rumba. Next was the Viennese waltz danced by Dr. Jennifer Williams of the Physics Department. Professor Jonathan Campbell, Dean of the Law Faculty, confidently attempted the slow waltz despite a few false starts.

Jonathan Davy of the Human Kinetics and Ergonomics Department performed a spicy, energetic cha-cha and Danika Marquis of the School of Journalism danced the flirty, carnavalesque samba with style.

The judges, who had mostly friendly commentary for the brave contestants, picked the glitzy performance by Davy and his partner Maxine Hoft as the winner. The second place was for Bekker’s rumba, while Williams’ Viennese waltz came third.

Local comedian and journalism student Tyson Ngubeni MCed the event with quirky commentary and hilarious anecdotes. The evening also saw several dance numbers by the Rhodes Dance Society including a contemporary piece, a jazz number and a mini line dancing workshop.

Audience members were encouraged to join a 'sokkie competition' while the judges deliberated.
