“Enchantment in all its various meanings” is what we can expect from the next concert of the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (ECPO), says their newsletter.
It promises to be “Bewitching in Dvorak’s Noonday Witch; dazzling in Weber’s Bassoon Concerto; and fascinating in Franck’s Symphony in D minor!”
For this concert, the orchestra welcomes Austrian conductor, Benjamin Lack to Port Elizabeth. It will accompany Namibian-born bassoonist Gunter Weyermüller, who currently plays for the Zürich Opera Orchestra in Switzerland, and will be here to play the Weber bassoon concerto.
Other performances include Dvorak's symphonic poem, the Noonday Witch. It tells the story of a mother who smothers her son to death while protecting him from a mythical witch who preys upon unruly children. And there will be a performance of Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D Minor, described by music critic Paul Serotsky as exhibiting “a unique sound-quality, exuding a darkly burnished glow, deep and rich like French-polished mahogany”.
