Motshekga was speaking at a briefing on development in the education sector, particularly relating to the curriculum, on 8 August.
Provincial education departments were given until 16 August to submit their furniture requirements to the national authorities.
Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Loyiso Pulumani said the department acknowledges that many schools in the province have inadequate furniture.
In an emailed reply to questions from Grocott's Mail, he said a backlog in the upgrading of equipment was making the situation worse.
“The department must address the chronic shortage over a period of time,” said Pulumani.
The department has allocated R30 million in its 2013/14 financial year to address the problem.
