Rhodes University students will flock to Port Elizabeth this weekend for the annual Intervarsity weekend.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) host the event which starts today and continues until tomorrow afternoon.

Hundreds of students from Rhodes University, Water Sisulu University and Fort Hare University will join the 'Madibaz' students in supporting and competing in no fewer than 23 different disciplines.

Apart from rugby, volleyball, netball, hockey, golf, surfing, soccer and squash, the students will also vie for honours in competitive ballroom dancing, debating and moot court.

NMMU has won the Intervarsity title every year since the university was established in 2005.

In order to monitor the “fun” side of the weekend’s events, NMMU’s Director of Sport Richard Stretch said students attending the event will have to behave responsibly.

All four universities have developed a code of conduct for the annual event to ensure students do not put themselves or university property at risk.

Activities began this morning at 7.30am with golf at the adjacent Humewood Golf Club and culminate with the main rugby and soccer games at 3pm tomorrow.
