Workers are putting the final touches on the new R7.6 million Lukhanyiso Poultry Co-op in Grahamstown's industrial zone, set to open at the end of this month.

According to MBB Consulting Services project manager Henty van der Merwe, the new Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agriculture initiative is almost ready to fly.

Aimed at empowering emerging business people and addressing the lack of employment in Grahamstown, chairperson of the beneficiary group, Kenneth Mdana, said approximately 26 people will be employed to pluck, slaughter, clean and pack chickens, as well as drive delivery vehicles. The project has 278 beneficiaries, 149 of whom are women, 68 are youths and six disabled people.

MEC for Rural Development and Agriculture in the Eastern Cape, honourable Zoleka Capa, said the Department will also engage the Mbizana local municipality to facilitate off-take agreements with communities to ensure a constant supply of poultry to the local abattoir.

Lukhanyiso Poultry is situated in the vicinity of Waainek prison and will produce 2000 broilers per day when at full capacity.
