Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Africa featherweight champion, Demarte Pena was in Grahamstown last weekend for a training camp with the Rhodes University Mixed Martial Arts Club.
Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Africa featherweight champion, Demarte Pena was in Grahamstown last weekend for a training camp with the Rhodes University Mixed Martial Arts Club.
Pena, who holds training camps across South Africa and his home country Angola, said the aim was to get better recognition for the sport in South Africa.
Pena is part of Johannesburg-based Fight Fit Militia club. Is there where he met Rhodes University Mixed Martial Arts Club instructor Aidan Brown, who invited Pena to Rhodes. Sessions were held from Thursday 8 August to Sunday 11 August, with classes from beginner to advanced.
Pena said he was impressed with how quickly Rhodes club members picked up on the techniques.
Mixed Martial Arts members train in the Rhodes University Dojo next to the Alec Mullins Hall.
Classes are split into advanced and beginner classes, taught by Aidan Brown and Kyle Valentine respectively.
The popular beginner classes are offered five times a week to accommodate the high numbers.
Self-defence makes up a large part of the training.
