Parts of Grahamstown have been without water for more than a week and residents, no strangers to these shortages, are furious.
“We have had no water since Thursday last week and the reason as to why was not communicated with us”, said an angry resident living in Goba Street, Joza. “We are struggling to cook. The water tank erected by the municipality is empty and has not been filled.”
The owner of a factory which manufactures concrete products in Strowan Road, said the site had been without water for five days.
“With no water we cannot mix the concrete”, she explained.

Several Rhodes University residences are also without water.

“The municipality informed us that the Waainek water pump is under repair and that the water should come back on by lunchtime (8 August)” said Jay Pillay, the deputy director of residential operations for Rhodes University.

Other reports said that the pump at Howieson’s Poort is broken and that pipes are being replaced at Glen Melville Dam.

No municipal departments would confirm or deny this information, referring queries to their communications department, which was unavailable for comment.

On the social media platform Twitter, complaints continue to flow faster than the trickling water.

“Yet another water shortage here in Grahamstown,” said @Ang26Pit. Another annoyed resident @Thulzzy¬_M tweeted: “How do they expect us to shower and get ready for school when there’s no water? Grahamstown can be a problem though!”
