One of the highlights of National Women’s Day in Grahamstown will be a High Heel Walk in which municipal spokesperson Mncedisi Boma will also participate. He said he wants to show that “it is okay to walk in high heels”.
The festivities will start at 10am at the City Hall, where Makana Mayor Zamuxolo Peter officially open the event.
About 750 women from different wards of Makana and rural areas have been invited. Transport has been arranged for all areas except Ward 12.
The theme of this year’s Women’s Day is ‘Advancing the fight against women and children abuse, and substance abuse’.
“It is important to transform people’s mindset [about]women, so that they don’t become victims of rape, sexual abuse and other social ills,” said Boma.
The opening will be followed by entertainment in the form of music and catering.
“The women will be encouraged to sing and dance because we understand that this is what makes them happiest, said Boma.
"Women’s Day is important to pamper them and see them smile. Respecting women is also important.”
The Office of the Speaker will hand out gifts.
Church Square on the Standard Bank/City Hall side between Hill and Bathurst Streets will be closed off to traffic. The municipality said they regretted any inconvenience to members of the public.
