Both the Mary Waters Secondary girls’ and boys’ first rugby teams won their matches last weekend during the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Rugby games took place on Friday and Saturday, while hockey, netball and soccer added to the excitement on Saturday.

The Mawas firsts won the main rugby encounter of the weekend, beating Plettenberg Bay Secondary 37-7. In the girls’ match, Mary Waters outclassed Aeroville Secondary, from Somerset East, 19-12.

In the only hockey match of the tournament, Mary Waters firsts went down 0-2 to the John Bisseker Secondary team from East London.

The hosts were unbeaten in the U19 netball, with Mawas girls beating both Plettenberg Bay and Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary.

They drew with John Bisseker Secondary. Errol Goliath, head of sport at Mary Waters, said the tournament was a “huge success”, adding that it was well supported by the community.

He also said the Old Boys deserved a pat on the back for their game on Friday evening. “Although out of breath, [they]still displayed their experience and skills.”
