Hospital staff were protesting after management allegedly banned them from parking inside ward facilities. Visitors who came to see patients were turned away. One employee told Grocott’s Mail, “We were told that our cars are a security threat.”
Police were called to monitor the situation. Fort England CEO Dr Roger Walsh said: “I only called police officer Mali Govender to make her aware of the situation, not because it had become violent.”
One visitor confirmed that five police officers had come to the ward gate to observe the protest. “I came to visit my cousin who is a patient in the hospital. I was told to come back on another day,” the visitor said.
The employees eventually dispersed after members of the hospital’s management promised a meeting to sort out their issues. “My main concern is patient welfare,” Walsh said, “I must make sure that health care services are properly delivered to those in need.”
