Estate agency Pam Golding has sold Grahamstown’s most expensive three-bedroom apartment ever.

Estate agency Pam Golding has sold Grahamstown’s most expensive three-bedroom apartment ever.

The 230m² luxury penthouse flat was recently sold for R3.38 million.

It is part of the family-oriented Dewhurst apartment block under construction on Holland Street. It has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a lounge and open-plan dining area.

It also boasts a scullery and very spacious balcony – all the more room to appreciate the stunning west-facing views of Grahamstown.

The building also has four two-bedroom apartments on the first two floors, going for around R1.796m. Each of the two-bedroom flats measure 113m².

Originally two apartments with wooden decks were going to be built on the top story, but someone from Port Elizabeth bought the entire top floor and had it transformed into the elite penthouse.

Pam Golding agent Debi Brody said all but one of the apartments have already been snatched up by parents of children in Grahamstown private schools.

“I don’t think any [apartments]are going to be available for rent,” she said.

All the units have open-plan living rooms, air conditioning and under-floor heating. Dewhurst also has a communal swimming pool and a braai area.

Building plans say security at the complex is going to be tight, with strong magnetic doors at the ground entrance, electric fences and private parking.

Dewhurst also features aluminium doors and windows and porcelain tiles.

The company responsible for building Dewhurst is Roy Bowles Construction.

While the estate agents and builders are no doubt pleased about the new development, the construction comes at a time when Makana Municipality is already battling to sustain the city’s infrastructure.

Makana councillor Julia Wells said it’d be better if the private sector provided its own infrastructure, because the municipality doesn’t have enough funds to support Grahamstown’s growing demand for new accommodation.

Wells said the poor will continue to suffer if it is left to the municipality to provide new luxury developments with sewage and electricity.

However, Roy Bowles argues local builders have contributed to infrastructure development by providing free electricity upgrades.

He also says Makana has underspent on infrastructural improvement.

Bowles has built many blocks of flats in Grahamstown including The Hub, One on Luke, Three on Luke, New Holland and Third on Milner.
