The South African Football Association Cacadu Women’s Regional play-offs take place in Grahamstown tomorrow. The finals will also be played at the Rhodes University Prospect Fields on Sunday.
The overall winners will be crowned Cacadu champions and then go on to represent the district in the provincial play-offs. Thereafter they stand a chance to qualify for the Sasol League.
African Connection finished top of their pool in the regional league, picking up an extra six points after the final fixtures last Sunday. The final group matches were played in Marselle.
In both games, African Connection won soft points as their opponents failed to pitch up. However, coach and team manager Chris Totobela said his side played two friendly games. In the first friendly they beat Cacadu United 3-0. They then flogged non-league team Young Chiefs 6-0.
Eight teams will compete in this weekend’s play-offs, with two teams split into two groups of four. African Connection are in a group with Camdeboo Women’s Football Club (Graaff-Reinet), Chancey (Addo) and AC Milan (Alexandria).
The second group is comprised of Everton (Aberdeen), Young Stars (Kirkwood), Red Stars (Bathurst) and Cacadu United (Alexandria). Looking forward to this weekend’s play-offs, Totobela is confident that his team is ready.
They take the play-offs seriously, “as we always do”, but whatever the outcome of the matches are, “football will be the winner,” he said. Totobela said the team hopes for a home-ground advantage, but said they need the support of Grahamstonians.
He hopes locals will flock to support the formidable Grahamstown side.
Matches start from 10am on Saturday.
Final group matches are expected to start at the same time on Sunday, before the finals in the afternoon.
