A group of disabled people met with officials from the district municipality and Makana's Special Programmes Unit in the Extension 9 hall this week to discuss strategic planning.

Council Speaker Rachel Madinda-Isaac explained that Tuesday's meeting was to plan how to deal with the needs of the disabled and improve employment opportunities for them.

She spoke about Makana Municipality's programmes for the disabled, including sport.

"We proposed a skills development centre for the disabled because we have our own skills that we need to use and develop. Now that Cacadu is also joining, it is really promising," said one of those on the floor, Thandolwethu Spelman.

Fikile Mshiywa expressed frustration that similar meetings had been held many times previously, without any results.

He said one of the things visually impaired people like him needed was the introduction of traffic lights with sirens to indicate safe crossing.
