It was the last day of Schools Fest and pupils from across the country were not exactly thrilled about it, but still enjoyed their last productions.
It was the last day of Schools Fest and pupils from across the country were not exactly thrilled about it, but still enjoyed their last productions.
“I’m not happy about leaving, but I’m grateful for this festival because I had never seen a real production before,” said Chanté Whitebooi from Victoria Park High School.
The day started with the awards ceremony for the De Beers English Olympiad Top 15.
The winners were called out in rank order, all receiving a scholarship to Rhodes University and cash and voucher prizes. The Top three received all that and more, being awarded a trip to the United Kingdom at the end of the year for 11 days. What an amazing opportunity!
One of the last productions that the students were treated to was STDiesel which was presented by The UBOM! Eastern Cape Theater Company.
The name of the production is quite self explanatory about the topic: sexual education.
If there is one way to successfully drill the issues of safe sex, STDs, social pressures and relationships into the minds of teenagers, this is definitely the way to go.
The show was raw and rough, but to the point and straight forward. It catered to the needs of the teenagers and made it something they can all relate to.
Almost all teenagers are faced with the issues that the play addressed, so it definitely hit close to home.
“It was interesting to see it in a way that the youth can relate to; it was interesting, educational and it had the humour too,” said Emmalene le Roux from Victoria Park High School.
Hearing the chatter throughout the audience, the sad “aaaaah” when the lights dropped at the end of the show, and the standing ovation, it was quite easy to tell that the show was a success.
And so Schools Festival comes to a close, leaving the pupils with a newfound appreciation for the arts.
