Next Friday school pupils will compete in the local 'grand-slam of science', the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Grahamstown regional final.
Aimed at Grade 6-12 pupils, the prestigious Eskom Expo is South Africa’s only existing science competition for youngsters to exhibit their own scientific investigations.
The competition runs in 31 regions across the country and allows upcoming scientists to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings creatively and effectively.
Set to take place at Rhodes University, the institution has been one of the regional supporting sponsors over the last 33 years.
The university offers 10 first-year bursaries for science studies for the top five projects.
Organised and implemented by Scifest Africa, South Africa’s national science festival held in Grahamstown, finalists from last year's regionals won three golds, two silvers, three bronzes and a category award at the nationals in Johannesburg.
Scifest Africa director Anja Fourie says she has watched the competition grow from strength to strength over the years, especially with pupils who re-enter over a period of time.
She believes it's important to help identify young scientists early on in their school careers.
Anchor Expo sponsors are Eskom, the Department of Science and Technology, and Intel, alongside various others.
