A group of more than 20 police officers raided a popular New Street club on Thursday 4 July.
According to police reports, one woman in her 40s and five men in their 20s were arrested for carrying drugs during the raid on the Monastery.
The club is proud of the fact that its first major police raid bore no results of major controversy.
“It was hectic. None of us were expecting a raid like that," said Kestrel Raik, a bartender at The Monastery. "They just came in, searched us and left.”
No information has been released regarding further action on the arrests that were made.
The large amount of police officers present at the raid have led some to speculate that it might have been the result of a tip-off.
"I think it was a tip-off and that it was specific to the alternative sub-culture," said Alyx Carolus, a student at Rhodes University and Monastery regular.
A throng of more than 20 policemen and women seems to suggest that a 'big bust' was expected.
This was not the case, and the Monastery has had a clean record thus far with regard to drug dealer arrests.
Nonetheless, eyewitnesses say the police were polite, well-mannered and efficient in carrying out their actions.
In a telephonic interview Captain Mali Govender did not dispute the fact that in some cases they do work on information given by the public.
In this case, Govender did not mention whether or not The Monastery raid was based on a tip-off.
