Grahamstown's Eastern Cape welterweight boxing champion, Mzoxolo Ndwayana, met a disappointing end to a fight last weekend because of an injury.
The fight between the local sporting hero and Mncedisile Kasile at Orient Theatre in East London had to be stopped in the second round because Ndwayana was bleeding from a cut around his left eye.
Bulelani Ndwayana, Mzoxolo's father and coach, said it was a huge disappointment from their side because they had been fit for the fight last Saturday.
"Mzoxolo was headed before the end of round one," the boxer's father said, explaining where the injury came from.
Bulelani said the referee had to stop the fight in the second round because Mzoxolo was bleeding. Bulelani said the fight was a technical draw because it ended in round two.
If it had perhaps been stopped in round four they would have judged the winner by points instead, he said.
When Grocott's Mail interviewed Mzoxolo on Tuesday, he was still disappointed by what had happened on Saturday, but said incidents like injuries are to be expected.
He warned that boxing is not to be taken lightly, but said it's a sport that people should play with respect and skill.
Ndwayana appeals to local Grahamstown businesses for support.
He said he is looking for help with boxing kit, food for his training diet and other training tools.
