During the Festival period, arrests made by the Grahamstown police include four government officials, for drunk driving, and nine illegal immigrants.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said several government officials had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during this year's National Arts Festival.

She said on Friday 28 June police arrested 32 people for crimes including assault, burglary, reckless and negligent driving, drunk driving, intimidation and possession of drugs.

Last Saturday, 24 arrests were made – six of them drunk driving and the rest for robbery, and being drunk and disorderly.

On Sunday the police arrested 13 people for serious crimes.

Govender said on Monday the police made 22 arrests, including nine illegal immigrants, two for drunk driving and serious assaults, theft out of motor vehicle, and drug-related offences.

Some cases reported during the Festival period have included defeating the ends of justice and resisting arrest.
