A local councillor faces charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm after he allegedly stabbed an Extension 7 resident.

The man had to be rushed to hospital after the councillor allegedly stabbed him following a disagreement over electricity problems.

The incident happened early last month, according to the police.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed that the police were investigating a case against the councillor of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

"There was an altercation about electricity. The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim, who was taken to hospital," she said.

Govender said details about the 8 June incident were still sketchy, but investigations were under way.

The councillor appeared briefly in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court on Monday last week.

Magistrate Ntsoki Moni postponed the case to Tuesday 9 July for further investigation.

The councillor informed the court that he would like to apply for the services of a legal aid attorney. He is currently out on warning.
