Grahamstown police opened an inquest docket after the body of a young woman was found in a garden-refuse skip near Scott's Farm on 17 June.
The 29-year-old woman's body was discovered by a man looking for scrap metal. Lungiswa Cirha was among residents who gathered around the container that day as police removed the body.
Her worst fears were realised when it was confirmed that it was a relative's body in the container.
Her 29-year-old niece had disappeared two weeks previously, after setting off for a local pub. Cirha identified the body the following day.
Her neighbour, Antoinette Swaartbooi, whose house is not far from the bin, said she was one of the first at the scene.
She told Grocott's Mail that a man looking for scrap metal had discovered the partly decomposed body.
Grahamstown SAPS spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the police had responded to a call from a community member.
This week Govender said the investigation was now focusing on an assumption of murder, based on the post-mortem results.
"I can confirm that we are now investigating a case of murder," she said.
