Most people are embarrassed to cry in public, but you’re signing up for tears of laughter if you go to born-and-bred Grahamstonian Langa ‘Illy’ Kulati’s comedy show.

Laughter lovers can go to Olde 65 on New Street for his comedy evening on Monday 1 July, starting at 8pm.

“If people enjoy laughing they will enjoy the show!” Kulati said.

He will host a number of local stand-up acts including Virgil Prins and Comic Choice Award Nominee Tsepiso Nzayo.

Kulati’s passion for comedy ultimately came from watching the seven-o’clock sitcoms on SABC, he said. “I was such a TV fanatic growing up."

I didn’t really think about comedy in this sense until I saw a show called Pure Monate,” he said.

This show spurred Kulati on to write a comedy sketch that turned into an award-winning play at the Makana Junior Drama Development Festival.

Kulati matriculated from Mary Waters High School, and his school experiences form a big part of his stand-up content, he said.

Kulati says he’d like to write screenplays in the near future.
