SAfm, Rhodes Music Radio (RMR), CueRadio, True FM, Umhlobo Wenene, Kowie FM, Wild Coast FM and Radio Grahamstown will all be broadcasting Festival-focused content during the Grahamstown National Arts Festival from 27 June to 7 July.

SAfm will be broadcasting from the 1820 Settlers’ Monument, as they have done in previous years.

The shows to be broadcast on weekdays from Grahamstown will be Afternoon Talk from 2pm-4pm with Naledi Moleo, Talk Shop from 7pm to 9pm with Khanyi Magubane and on Saturdays SAfm Lifestyle with Michelle Constant from 9am to midday.

Ike Phaahla will also be hosting the Best of Jazz show to be broadcast live from the Standard Bank Jazz Festival.

Jozie Matshane, SAfm Programme Manager, said the programme has broadcast regularly from the National Arts Festival over the years and that they look forward to the Festival broadcasts in 2013.

Wild Coast FM will be teaming up with Kowie FM to cover the Jazz Festival from the Diocesan School for Girls and will be broadcasting a Sunday Jazz Show from 8pm to 10pm on Kowie FM and from 9pm to midnight on Wild Coast FM.

Wayne Naylor, Wild Coast FM Station Manager, said while they were currently taking “baby steps”, they looked forward to broader coverage in the future.

Umhlobo Wenene and True FM will also be covering the festival.

Algoa FM has in previous years broadcast live from the Festival, but will not be doing so this year.

"Algoa FM is fully committed to Grahamstown and the National Arts Festival and is promoting it extensively on air. We are, however, not in a position to host 'live' outside broadcasts from the City of Saints this year,” said Alfie Jay, Algoa FM Operations Manager.

RMR will be broadcasting three interviews an hour, every day of the festival. Planned interviews with locals include Fingo Festival performers and Langa, an RMR presenter and local comedian.

Langa will be performing at Olde ’65 during the Festival. National acts to be interviewed include Mi Casa and the Soweto String Quartet.

Rhodes student participation and interest in the Festival is higher this year, said Rungano Zendeia, RMR Station Manager, suggesting that interest in events would therefore be mixed.

CueRadio will be broadcasting an hour of content every day from midday to 1pm, from RMR on 89.7.

The CueRadio team consists of students from across the Rhodes Journalism and Media Studies School student body.

The CueRadio team will also be creating multilingual radio packages to be broadcast by the SABC.

Due to a lack of funding, CueRadio will be unable to work with Radio Grahamstown, as they did in previous years.

“The students work for free, but we felt it was unfair to then ask Radio Grahamstown to work for free as well,” said Danika Marquis, a Rhodes University Radio lecturer.

RMR is predominantly student-run and CueRadio in 2013 will be funded by the Journalism and Media Studies School, Marquis said.

Brian Garman, CueMedia publisher, said, “The other projects don’t have the same visibility as the newspaper. A lot of sponsors don’t see the value of the other projects, which is very frustrating.”
