Want to take the stress out of bringing your kids to the National Arts Festival? The Children’s Arts Festival offers a creative arts programme specially designed for primary school children.

It runs at the same time as the National Arts Festival (27 June – 7 July) and aims to release the artist within every child by developing their creativity, imagination and artistic ability.

Parents simply drop their children off at St Andrew’s Preparatory School; the venue for the Children’s Arts Festival, at 9am and collect them at 5pm.

Children aged 4-6 years join the Mini-festival and those aged 7-13 join the Day Programme.

Each day includes an age-appropriate National Arts Festival production, arts-related workshops and lunch.

Cindy Renard, the Festival Director, assures parents that no child will experience the same workshop or production twice.

“There are 25 different workshops on offer throughout the 10-day event,” Renard said.

As always, popular National Arts Festival performers will facilitate the drama workshops.

There will also be Marimba and Pantsula Dance workshops that will bring out that rhythm you never thought you had.

The handcraft workshops on offer include techniques such as wire work, painting, beadwork, macramé, paper-craft, mosaics, carnival masks, leather work and calligraphy.

The Children’s Arts Festival is generously supported by Standard Bank and by trusts administered by BoE and The National Arts Festival and Makana Municipality.

“We are extremely grateful to these companies, whose contributions will give many previously disadvantaged pupils from Grahamstown and surrounds the opportunity to also take part in this fun-filled creative arts programme,” said Renard.

Booking is essential, as children cannot afford to miss this enriching and fun-filled arts experience.
