Makana Municipality spent R502 492 on the Makana Freedom Festival at Egazini battle field near Vukani earlier this year – a budget municipal spokesperson Mncedisi Boma says is only set to increase.

"The budget will have to increase because this event is about our history," said Boma.

The two-day event catering for 10 000 people celebrated Makhanda Nxele, the Xhosa warrior after whom the municipality is named.

The half-a-million budget included catering, transport and accommodation for the Xhosa royal family, DJs and performing artists. Four cows and 18 sheep were bought for R56 900 and groceries cost R30 000.

ANC veterans and their families received R2 000 vouchers, amounting to R 58 000.

Three marques and six VIP toilets were hired, costing R 70 000 and six performing artists cost them R 70 800. The event is celebrated annually in April.
