What does and should K-Day mean to the boys and girls with the opportunity to take part in this special celebration of sporting ties between three Grahamstown schools that have such a long and happy association?

Whilst our schools are fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in inter-school derbies on a regular basis throughout the Eastern Cape, K-Day has developed its own identity and is a magnet for many parents and old boys and girls of the schools involved.

There’s no question that the vibe in and around our schools during this week is heightened in anticipation of the long-awaited K-Day sporting festivities.

It always worries me that many of the boys and girls, some parents, as well as some old boys and girls might place undue importance on the outcome of the multitude of games played over this week, and in so doing, risk putting unnecessary pressure on themselves and all those taking part.

It is of utmost importance that school sport is primarily played for the pure enjoyment associated with being able to compete against others and to express oneself in the athletic arena.

Everyone who takes part in any match during the course of this week should celebrate the opportunity that they have to be part of such a special experience.

We all have an obligation to play the game to the highest levels of sportsmanship and our ability.

We also have an obligation to display humility if we win and graciousness and courage in defeat.

This is no different to that which we should be doing every weekend.

My sincere wish is that all who participate in sport this week enjoy the experience.

That those who support their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters enjoy it with them and that all our coaches and mentors nurture the spirit of goodwill and friendship existing between our schools.

This was clearly in evidence when the first-team captains of our schools met for a group photograph earlier this week.

It was great to see the warmth and respect with which they greeted each other. Let us all enjoy this wonderful gathering in Grahamstown as we celebrate all that is good about school sport. –
