The South African Police Service was involved in action of a different kind on Wednesday as the Grahamstown Army Base hosted the SAPS provincial soccer trials.

Teams representing SAPS departments from Grahamstown, Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth, Cradock, Queenstown, Aliwal North, Umtata and East London, as well as a team from the Provincial Office, took to the field in the one-day event as officers put their bodies on the line for a spot in the provincial SAPS team.

There were four men’s matches in total, with two women’s matches played at the Fiddler's Green.

Simphiwe Nkosa, the Public Relations Officer for the SAPS National Executive Committee and a warrant officer in Port Alfred, said that results on the day were not of primary concern.

The main objective was to select the strongest possible squad to represent the Eastern Cape at the upcoming interprovincial tournament in Port Elizabeth.

This tournament will take place on 6 June and will include provincial SAPS teams from the Free State, Northern Cape and Gauteng.

SAPS women will be sending an Eastern Cape team to the national championships from 4-10 August, coinciding with National Women’s Day.

The provincial men’s team will be hoping to progress through to the national championships in September, after which players will hope to be selected for the national team taking part in the SAPS Southern African Cup in Windhoek, Namibia, later this year.
