Food, fun and fundraising – all in the name of acquiring sponsorship. Rhodes University’s The Hill Rugby Club brought down their entire squad on Tuesday evening for shadow shifts at Redwood Spur in a bid to raise funds for their team’s jerseys, squad member Ian Weir explained.

Each rugby player paired up with a waiter or waitress and helped serve customers, ensuring that business ran smoothly.

The team had approached restaurant owner Wessel Benson for sponsorship for their jerseys, who agreed that 10% of the profit that night would go towards paying for their kit.

Lots of their supporters came out on the night to raise as much money as possible.

The club raised R1 200 from the night's profits.

Benson said he hoped the event would generate as much interest as possible and welcomed similar future initiatives.
