Of the 23 competitive shooters in the Rhodes University Rifle Club, nine took part in the Eastern Province Small-Bore Rifle Association Championships on Saturday.

Of the 23 competitive shooters in the Rhodes University Rifle Club, nine took part in the Eastern Province Small-Bore Rifle Association Championships on Saturday.

The university club scooped a total of nine medals – three gold, three silver and three bronze at the event held at the Rhodes rifle range.

The Rhodes team consisted of coaches Mart-Mari de Bruyn (B-class), Justin Anderson (D-class) and Jessica Vercueil (D-class); and Gary Scheepers (C-class), Sean Cresswell (D-class), Ntsika Kota (D-class), Graeme Schmeldt (D-class), Hans van Zyl (D-class) and James Connan (D-class).

For Cresswell, Kota, Schmeldt and Connan this was their first ever competition and they certainly rose to the occasion, impressing their coaches, fellow teammates and competitors.

Cresswell, Vercueil and Connan also shot their personal best scores at the event.

 

Medals:

  • Sean Cresswell – Three gold – Match 1 winner, Match 2 winner, and overall D-class winner.
  • Hans van Zyl – Two bronze – Match 1 third place, Match 2 third place. One silver – overall second in D-class.
  • Justin Andersen – One silver – Match 1 second place. One bronze – third place overall in D-class.
  • Jessica Vercueil – One silver – Match 1 second place.
