Over 100 young athletes from Grahamstown and the surrounds did their best to record speedy times in the second leg of the Albany cross-country league trials last week.
Aiming for a shot at being on one of the Albany teams, pupils from the U10 to U19 age groups took to the course around Miki Yili Stadium last Wednesday.
The youngsters tackled a 2km course and the open age groups ran 8km.
The second of four stages, the first leg took place mid-April at Rhodes University.
An Albany team is to be selected at the end of the league trials. Pupils must take part in at least three of the four events to make the Albany side.
While the Albany league takes place, a separate Eastern Province league is starting on 25 May, and provincial education department sports specialist Maasdorp Cannon says this could happen in Grahamstown.
A team from the Albany league will be selected to take part in the EP league.
Schools represented last week included Samuel Ntsiko, Kuyasa, Amasango, NV Cewu, DD Siwisa, Nombulelo, Makana's Kop, Fikizolo, Archie Mbolekwa, St Mary's, Victoria Girls' High, Victoria Primary, Graeme College as well as Bongweni and Ukhanyo.
The next Albany league trials take place on Wednesday 22 May at a venue yet to be confirmed.
