The Rhodes University Masincedane Society’s Singing For Soup event has been very popular in the past and tonight it forms part of the university’s Community Engagement Week.
The society has organised an exciting line-up of musical acts to entertain; from elegant spoken-word poetry and heart-racing Spanish flamenco guitar, to celebrated local musicians, such as Maude and Dave Glover and the acclaimed Lizzie Gaisford.
Doors open at 7pm, with the first act starting at 8pm.
And what goes better with fantastic music than a cup of home-made soup and bread? R8 will get you a cup of steaming soup, with an extra R2 bagging you a slice of tasty home-baked bread.
The society hopes to draw on its past successes – but hope to raise even more money.
“Our last event was a success from an attendance point of view,” society chair Tim Abel said, “However, we raised under R4 000. This is a little bit less than what we would have hoped for.”
Abel said this was because of the limited amount of soup they had to sell and “we missed out on an opportunity to raise a considerable amount of money”.
It’s a mistake they’re determined not to repeat and on Friday a soup-making competition will be held to ensure that there will be enough. Entrants’ culinary creations will be sold at the event.
“I would imagine that there will definitely be a lot of staples, such as butternut soup, but possibly some more imaginative ones too,” Abel said.
Entrance to the event is R15 for society members and R20 for everyone else. Funds raised will be put towards the Masincedane community garden and soup kitchen.
