In referring to Himself as the spring of living water, God was reminding Judah – and yes you and I – that He alone is the source and preserver of life both physical and spiritual.
In what way was God their spring of living water? In Jeremiah 2:6-7 God reminds them that He delivered them from bondage in Egypt, that He led them through the wilderness, supplying them with all they needed and that He brought them into the promised Land, Canaan.
He was their deliverer, sustainer and provider. So in what way is God our spring of living water?
In and through Jesus Christ He has delivered us from the bondage of sin that separates us from Him and by His Holy Spirit He leads us through the wilderness of life providing for our every need, leading us to a promised eternity with Him.
John 7:38 says, “Whoever believes in me, as the scriptures have said, streams of living water will flow from within Him”.
Judah sadly built their own worthless idols, foreign gods and a false sense of security. They were comfortable with their material wealth and easy life to the point where they did not ask, “Where is the Lord?”
These were stagnant pools, poor substitutes for God the stream of living water, pools that promised fulfilment and security but couldn't deliver.
Are we guilty of building man-made reservoirs that become stagnant pools, promise fulfilment but cannot deliver?
Materialism, immorality, greed, false teaching, work, sport and play promise much but cannot hold water. Life physical and spiritual finds its source in God alone, the spring of living water.
Jesus says, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”.
