The police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of arson following a fire that gutted a Grahamstown shop, destroying hundreds of thousands of rands worth of stock.

Responding to questions, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the police open an arson case whenever damage is substantial, or if they suspect a crime has been committed.

"The amount is substantial. We are still investigating," Govender said. She said forensic experts had worked at the scene after the blaze to establish what the cause.
