In the early kick-off, Abu Dhabi overcame Mandela FC 1-0 to extend their unbeaten run this season, and cement their place at the top of Pool A.
Fantastic 11 took on winless Cory in a very physical encounter, which saw Fantastic 11 reduced to 10 men midway through the first half after a two-footed challenge just outside the box.
Cory could not capitalise, however and, despite the one-man advantage conceded late in the second half.
Goldfields had to fight hard to earn their first win of the season in a tough battle against bottom-of-the-log Motley Crue.
Their opponents, who came off the back of a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of De Beers FC on Monday, rallied hard from 2-0 down at half time to draw level with 15 minutes left on the clock.
Goldfields were wasteful in front of goal, but managed to sneak in the winner in the final minutes of the game.
In an exciting development, this year’s league has increased substantially and now includes 21 teams split into two pools.
Newcomers include FC Illuminati, De Beers FC and Motley Crue, with a total of 130 fixtures to be played during the course of the season.
The top four teams from each pool progress to a knock-out style competition for league honours. League matches take place every Monday and Wednesday night on Prospect Field.
The league runs concurrently with a cup competition that is already in the quarter final stage and is played every second weekend.
Marc Lovatt, administrator of the league, said he is happy with it so far, and is doing his best to ensure the smooth-running of the competition.
“We have attempted to raise the bar this year, in terms of exposing the league and improving upon it. The league has huge potential,” said Lovatt.
Lovatt stated that the quality of all teams this season is extremely high, with last year’s champions Phoenix Knights, as well as Titans, Abu Dhabi and Amazulu (who face each other in a top-of-the-table clash next week) among the favourites for league glory.
