The Rhodes University first rugby team lost their first match in the Adams League of the Eastern Province Rugby Union Super League to log leaders Trying Stars on Saturday 27 March.

Trying Stars won the match 40-25.

The Adams Cup league got underway at the beginning of this month but Rhodes only joined the fray last weekend due to the university's April vacation.

“We were up against a better side that maximised on any opportunity to score,” said Rhodes first-team coach Qondakele Sompondo.

He went on to say although his side lost he was happy with the fact that "we fielded six first years and they all did very well, with one of them being a man of the match".

Sompondo also said a number of key players on the Rhodes side have injuries at the moment, “but the young guys brought their A-game with”.
