Exciting young Italian string ensemble the Trio Broz will stop to play in Grahamstown for a night on their national tour next month.
Hosted by the Grahamstown Music Society, the award-winning siblings will add the City of Saints to their list of worldwide performance venues.
On their SA tour from Gauteng and along the Garden Route they will play works by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Sibelius and Latin-American Luis Bacalov.
Sisters Barbara and Giada (violin and viola), and brother Klaus (cello) are all top chamber music graduates from famous academies in Rome and Florence.
The siblings’ interpretations of Haydn, Sussmayr, Mozart and Schubert won them scholarships to study further at the famous Salzburg Mozarteum.
The Trio has garnered rave reviews and numerous awards for their CDs and over 450 concerts worldwide.
Their two most recent CDs, Divertimento (2011) and Tang’Jok (Them) (2013) will be promoted on their SA tour.
Of their ability to play from memory the Trio says, “It is in fact rare to see a chamber music group play without the music in front of them, but we don’t find it difficult to do. In our opinion it actually makes the playing easier!
"One afternoon… we started to play through the Corelli Sonata da Chiesa Op.1 No.6, the piece for a contest and, not wanting to open the music stands through laziness, we played it from memory. In doing this we noticed we were playing better.”
Their local performance will be on Thursday 2 May at 7.30pm in the St Andrew’s College Drill Hall.
They will play Schubert's Satz-Trio D471, Beethoven's Trio op. 9 no. 1 in G major, Sibelius's Trio in G minor and Luis Bacalov's Trio per archi.
Tickets cost R80, R60 for pensioners, R40 for tertiary students, and no charge for school goers or Grahamstown Music Society members.
If you aren’t able to make it to their Grahamstown performance, they will be in Port Alfred on Friday 3 May.
Featuring on the 'Classics at the Castle’ programme at the Richmond House Museum, the show starts at 5.30pm.
