Two of South Africa's top squash players squared off in the men's final of the Twizza Rhodes University Squash Club Open last weekend.
Adrian Hansen, ranked seventh in SA, once again faced Gary Wheadon (SA number 10) in what was almost a repeat of the previous year's final.
This time round, Wheadon was still on a high after beating Hansen in a tournament earlier this year.
However, he was unable to continue running with his lucky streak as Hansen reclaimed his power and with it the title of 2013 Rhodes Open winner.
Hansen beat Wheadon 3-0 in the final.
In the women's section, Jackie Ryder faced EP number-one Lizelle Goosen in the final.
Goosen went into the final as the tournament number-one ranked player, with Ryder as the number two. Ryder rattled Goosen by taking the second game, but Goosen came back strong to win 3-1.
Rhodes number-one women's player Shanna Swart finished the tournament in fifth spot, while a first-year student, Amy Farrel, finished in sixth.
Other students placing high in the tournament were Caroline Ross in seventh, Joy Ridgard eighth, Carmen Foster 10th and Natalie Ross 11th.
The best-ranked Rhodes men's player was Stefan Euijen who finished the Open in sixth spot. Euijen came into the tournament ranked eighth after last year's tournament.
He enjoyed a fine 3-0 win against number five Thami Mngcete to move up in the rankings.
This was even a bigger win for Euijen as he had previously lost to Mngcete in an Eastern Province league match earlier this year.
Matthew Ferreira of Rhodes finished 11th.
According to tournament organiser and Rhodes Squash Club Chairman Brendan Martens, the Open was an official Eastern Province and Squash South Africa points ranking tournament.
This was the 16th edition of the Rhodes Squash Open, which once again produced some top action among some of the top names in South African squash.
This year's Rhodes Open was sponsored by Twizza.
