Former car washers marched on City Hall in protest against municipal bylaw forbidding them from washing cars on public streets under threat of a R200 fine.

"We don't want to do crime!" they shouted while opening High Street dustbins and strewing their contents all the way to the municipality's doorstep.

Former car washers marched on City Hall in protest against municipal bylaw forbidding them from washing cars on public streets under threat of a R200 fine.

"We don't want to do crime!" they shouted while opening High Street dustbins and strewing their contents all the way to the municipality's doorstep.

This video by Kyle Lindeque shows the protestors climbing into a police van.

When nine police officers arrested 11 protesters, two of them walked away while the rest were getting in a van.

"We were in a meeting when we heard the noise, and when we came outside we saw all this rubbish," Councillor Mabhuti Matyumza told Grocott's Mail.

The men have subsequently been released and the municipality is not pressing charges.

Read the full report in Friday's paper.
