The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) commemorated national Human Rights Day with the hosting of the National Water and Sanitation Hearing in Midrand on Tuesday.
The purpose of the hearing was to create an opportunity for the Commission to engage with the government about service delivery, and to get the relevant departments to respond to some of the problems people raised during the provincial hearings that took place between August and December 2012.
The Commission will present its report with findings and recommendations from the provincial hearings to government departments and key stakeholders.
Human Rights Day is celebrated on 21 March to honour the 69 people killed by policemen at Sharpeville in 1960.
Many of those who died were shot in the back while participating in a protest against the pass laws. The carnage made world headlines.
Four days later the government banned black political organisations, many leaders were arrested or went into exile.
Human Rights Day is but one step to ensure that the people of South Africa are aware of their human rights and to ensure that the abuses that occurred under Apartheid are never repeated.
