Relatives of a man whose found dead at a house in Zolani could not hold back their emotions as police officers gathered evidence outside, where his body was found.

One of two relatives at the scene started crying as the police continued to look for evidence, while residents looking on from behind the cordoned area murmured that it was hard to believe the young man had died.

The police reportedly removed a number of weapons from the house. Zolani resident Mzolisi Litye, who was at the scene, told Grocott's Mail that he had heard from neighbours around 7am yesterday that his friend had been killed.

"He was a friend of mine, but he lived on the other side," he said.

Litye said when he arrived at the scene, there were already onlookers gathered and the police had arrived.

When I arrived there the police had removed weapons from the house where his body was found," he said.

Ward committee member Mxolisi Makeleni said they were not sure who was arrested for the murder, but said they had heard someone had handed themselves over to the police after the incident.

Makeleni said the dead man was involved in a fight on Sunday with a group of men whom he didn't know.

"We called the police but they never came. It's a problem that we encounter a lot. We call the police but they never come," Makeleni said.

Makeleni said the area had been quiet for a while prior to this incident.

"There used to be incidents of crime here, but as some people left the area the crime levels have decreased," he said.

Residents had demolished a house belonging to someone accused of murder some years back, he said.

Claiming that the house where the body was found was notorious for criminal activity, some residents called for it, too, to be demolished.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said she was "not aware if anyone was arrested at this stage".
