Makana municipality has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of David Makele, who died on his way from fetching water from municipal trucks during a water outage last weekend.
The 34-year-old Hlalani resident collapsed on his way home from another area where he went to fetch water. He and his neighbours had been without water for the whole weekend.
Municipal spokesman Mncedisi Boma said Mayor Zamuxolo Peter would visit the family this week. "It is indeed sad news that a member of the community died."
"We have in the past intervened as the municipality in several situations – like the family of [Hlalani attack victim Thandiswa] Qubuda: we supported them during a very difficult time."
"We will be going [to this family]and hear where can we assist as the municipality," said Boma. "Our intervention is on humanitarian grounds."It is unfortunate that at the time of his death he was looking for water and that as the municipality we were providing water through our trucks."
Boma said the municipal truck driver, who was qualified in first aid, had tried to help resuscitate Makele before the paramedics arrived. Makele's funeral will be tomorrow.
