Grahamstown has the privilege of hosting Scifest Africa, an annual event that brings scholars, scientists and visitors from all over the country to our neck of the woods.
And many Grahamstonians don’t know anything about it.

I was at Rhodes University for four years, but didn’t once make the trip up the hill to see what Scifest has to offer. This year, I was forced to download the programme and choose a couple topics to cover. I didn’t expect much, as science is as foreign to me as Chinese, but after reading it through, I was excited about my soon to be busy schedule.
The great thing about Scifest is that it does not matter how old you are, what you are studying or whether you have the faintest idea about science, it’s about learning something new and having fun. Scifest guarantees something for everyone. Children, students and adults all flock to the Laser show, which includes a dramatic combination of ice fog, a water screen and lasers.
Another event that caught my eye is Speed-date-a-scientist workshop, which promises to introduce you to scientists from around the world and ask them as many questions regarding science as you can in the three minutes before you have to move on to your next partner.
There are even workshops for the fashionistas. “Blingalicious” investigates the prehistoric art of jewellery making.
A Scifest programme can be downloaded here. Read it, but beware! You may get addicted.
