Education MEC Mandla Makupula returned to Grahamstown for the second time in the space of a week to tackle some of the district's most urgent problems.
Makupula was back in town yesterday to engage in public hearings with school principals, school governing body leaders, parents and learners at Noluthando Hall.
The main focus of the hearings, according to a statement from Grahamstown district director Amos Fetsha, was to discuss the rationalisation and re-alignment of schools in the district.
"This is a valuable opportunity for you to contribute to our collective effort to improve the quality of education, to expedite the resourcing of schools, to promote access to schools and ensure the retention of learners and educators in our schools," Fetsha said.
Last week the MEC spoke to parents of Benjamin Mahlasela High School about relocating pupils to nearby schools following the drastic drop in numbers of learners who attend the school and rampant vandalism of its facilities.
At the emotional gathering, parents supported the proposal.
Among ideas for the building's use were that it could be transformed into a teacher resource centre, or be used by another group of pupils who had enough numbers.
