Three exciting rugby tournaments have been keeping local rugby clubs – and supporters – on their toes for the past few weeks.

Top Grahamstown club, Brumbies, has been thrashing it out in the Super 12 competition, which showcases the top six Eastern Province sides against the top six Border clubs.

In their last match, played last weekend, Brumbies made it through to the quarter-finals of the competition. Then there is the President’s Cup, sponsored by the Eastern Cape government.

The President’s Cup started with the various sub-unions in the region playing against each other.

The South Eastern District Rugby Union (Sedru) leg of the competition was won by Trying Stars after they beat Rhodes University in the final at the Oval on Tuesday evening.

Trying Stars will now play against the winners of other sub-unions in the Eastern Province.

The overall winner will then face the winner of the Border sub-union in the curtain raiser to the Super 12 competition final.

The third competition currently on the go is the one probably closest to many local rugby fanatics’ hearts; the Makana Mayoral Cup, which has seen games played at the Oval and Miki Yili Stadium over the past few weeks.

The Mayoral Cup final is scheduled to take place on 21 March at Miki Yili.

While the Mayoral Cup organisers hoped to get a women’s seven-a-side tournament going in conjunction with the main tournament, this was unsuccessful.

However, women’s teams Wanderers and Winter Rose played a seven-a-side game last weekend, with Wanderers stealing the show with a 25-0 win.

Clubs currently involved in these competitions will take part in the various Eastern Province league fixtures scheduled to start in April.

Brumbies will represent Grahamstown in premier rugby league, the Grand Challenge, while Rhodes and Eastern will take part in the Adams Cup.

The remainder of the Grahamstown clubs take part in the Wellman Harmse league.
