Rhodes University is holding its annual Pride Week next week, with a number of exciting events organised and hosted by OUTRhodes.

Pride Week is focused on celebrating the sexual identity of all students, placing particular emphasis on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.

Sunday afternoon presents ‘Body Mapping’ at 2pm on the Drostdy Lawns.

Charlene Donald, who leads OUTRhodes’ activism portfolio, explains the therapeutic process involved in this event.

“It involves painting a life-size representation of your body on to paper or a canvas using images, symbols and words to map out places in you that are full of life, places that are in pain, and places that hold hope and potential for the future."

"A person's body map is their perception, understanding and experience of their own body. Body Mapping allows you to explore and creatively communicate the stories that you live in your body,” said Donald.

OUTRhodes President Alia Jenkins outlined the rest of the week’s activities. “Monday will be ‘Share your messages’, in which we will be painting a wall near the Rhodes Library from 12pm onwards.”

Jenkins said people who are not members of OUTRhodes are welcome to paint their thoughts on the wall.

The Union Bar will host their weekly meeting entitled Koffie Kroeg, in which participants snack on tea and treats and discuss various issues.

This discussion, from 7pm to 9pm, is titled ’Racism in the Queer Community’.

Wednesday brings a movie night, in conjunction with Anime Society from 6.30pm–9.30pm in the Zoo Minor lecture theatre.

There will also be a photo-shoot from midday.

The details of that have yet to be finalised. Thursday will see the OUTRhodes pride march and vigil starting at 6pm.

The march starts at the School of Journalism and Media Studies and ends at the Drostdy lawns.

The weekend holds something a little different: on Friday 15 March at 6pm there will be a talk on safe sex in The Rat and Parrot’s beer garden, and the ‘OUTRhodes 101 Prep School Party’ is being held on Saturday at the Monastery.
