Last weekend, dozens of dogs were spayed and neutered, thanks to a joint initiative of the SPCA and the Phoenix Dog Project (PDP).

In total, 57 dogs (49 bitches and eight males) from Vukani and Fingo Village were identified. While 53 of these dogs were fixed, four were found to be ill with biliary and were not operated on.

Spaying and neutering are alternatives to the more radical euthanasia. The SPCA organised the event on Saturday 23 February to reduce the number of unwanted litters.

Rika Ferreira, coordinator of Spay Day, says it was “a huge success”, and this will in turn reduce the number of cruelty cases that are reported each year.

The dogs were collected from their owners' homes on Thursday and Friday and were fixed at the SPCA.

Dr Mpumelelo Zondi from Aliwal North performed the operations at a specially reduced fee.

A group of volunteers, which included Sophi Jevons, Megan Heard, Caren Lewis, Melissa Goddard and Hannah Burbach from the Phoenix Dog Project, also gave some of their time in the recovery room.

The event was made possible by the donations from Grahamstown supporters of fund-raising events held by SPCA and the Phoenix Dog Project. Another Spay Day is expected to be held in September.
