Does your dog have the most appealing eyes in Grahamstown? Or is it the best golden oldie? Dog owners were able to find out where their pooches stand (from a more objective point of view) at the second annual fun dog show and dog walk Pet’s Place in Salem on Saturday.

The show was preceded by an hour-long dog walk on the property. Organised by Pet’s Place owner Eileen Gibb and judged by John and Carol Westwood, the informal competition had 55 entries in eight categories.

All entrants then vied for the envied top spot of ‘Best Dog’.

Category winners included Chanté Bradfield’s springer spaniel for Best Trick, Sophie Mullins-Poole’s dog Fearnley for Best Mixed Breed, and Graham Whetton and his pooch Sonny for ‘Best Friends’.

Prizes included a free seven-day stay at the holiday kennels. Best Big Dog was appropriately awarded to Aslan, the boerbul who also bagged the overall prize: a 25kg carrier of Montego dog food.

Liz Gowans, who entered Aslan while her father was in the UK, said, “I think my dad will be delighted.”

Plants, jumble sale items, hot dogs and cakes were also donated by the community and sold.

Proceeds from the event go to the Bible Society of South Africa, for whom R4 500 was collected with last year’s event.

“It bothers me that most of the world doesn’t have a Bible and that the price of printing Bibles is prohibitive,” says Eileen Gibb, organiser of the Pet’s Place fun dog show.

Bible Society Eastern Cape regional head Ben Fourie was very thankful for the creation of the event.

“Without donations, there would be no Bible Society,” he said.

The Bible Society tries to make the Bible available in all formats, including CDs for blind people, Bibles for deaf people with a limited vocabulary and for individuals with a limited vocabulary.

The Society has also made it possible to download Bibles onto cellphones from www.biblesociety.co.za.
