The Cacadu District Municipality emerged triumphant after the 2013 Vuna Awards ceremony, held in East London on Wednesday.

Two of the most significant awards were handed to Cacadu – a trophy and R65 000 for maintaining an unqualified audit for six consecutive years.

Cacadu Executive Mayor Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana received the award for Best Municipal Mayor for the 2011/2012 Financial Year.

Kekana also received a trophy in recognition of this award, with a further R25 000 for the district municipality.

Criteria for the Best Municipal Mayor award were: Establishment of both political structures and administrative systems; expenditure of 90-100% of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant or Urban Settlements Development Grant funding; maintenance of unqualified audit opinions over a period of four years and high IDP credibility.

Camdeboo Local Municipality received an award of R40 000 for good performance on service-delivery.

The annual Vuna Awards are an initiative of the Department of Provincial and Local Government, in partnership with the South African Local Government Association, the Development Bank of Southern Africa, and the National Productivity Institute.

They are aimed at promoting creative and innovative municipal service delivery, identifying and supporting poorly performing municipalities, building confidence in municipalities and improving the image of local government.

Cacadu district municipality covers 58 242 square kilometres and incorporates the local municipalities of Makana, Kouga, Ndlambe, Camdeboo, Sunday's River Valley, Blue Crane Route, Kou-Kamma, Baviaans and Ikwezi.
