A young woman who was brutally murdered with her boyfriend earlier this month was buried last weekend.

Local police are still looking for suspects in the brutal double murder that sent shock waves through the Joza community earlier this month.

On 9 February, Grahamstown police were called to the scene, where they found a man in his 30s and woman in her 20s, both covered in blood.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender confirmed this week that both were savagely assaulted and murdered.

Responding to questions from Grocott's Mail, Govender said, "Reports that the male victim's tongue was cut off are true. The female victim was assaulted around her abdomen region and other parts of her body."

The suspect is still at large, according to the police. In a previous statement, Govender said a couple in their 50s had been woken up by the continuous barking of dogs outside their home in Joza.

"The wife decided to go out and investigate. Within a short period of time, the husband heard his wife screaming and as he proceeded to go out, his wife came back with a stab wound on her neck," Govender said.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found a woman in her 20s at the door of an outside flat in the same yard, and a man in his 30s, covered in blood, Govender said.

The woman was declared dead at the scene, while the man died later that morning in hospital.

The police have appealed to community members who can assist with the investigation to contact investigating officer Warrant Officer John Manzana at 082 779 7117 or 046 603 9111.
